Billing & Staffing

Rates & Staffing

Exceptional legal representation at rates below the national-firm competitors we routinely face — and staffed leanly, so every hour billed has meaningful purpose.

“Quality legal representation is never inexpensive. Nonetheless, our hourly rates are lower than many of the national firms with whom we compete.”

Jenkins Kayayan LLP

Rate Structure & Approach

Competitive Hourly Rates

Our hourly rates are lower than many of the national firms with whom we compete — firms that often bill at a significant premium for overhead and brand. You receive major-firm experience and talent at rates that reflect our boutique structure.

Client Communication

We strive to involve our clients in all aspects of their cases, including estimated costs, staffing decisions, and real-time developments. You will never wonder what is happening in your matter or be surprised by an invoice.

Results Over Hours

For us, practicing law is not about billable hours. It is about taking pride in our work and the results we deliver. Our billing practices reflect that philosophy — we focus on getting to the right outcome efficiently, not on maximizing time entries.

Flexible Staffing

We scale up and down as matters demand, drawing on experienced associates, specialized contractors, and e-discovery specialists. You pay only for the resources your matter requires — no standing overhead, no unnecessary layers.

The Boutique Advantage

Jenkins Kayayan LLP occupies a particular niche. We provide the legal horsepower of a major national firm, with both partners trained at Latham & Watkins and with deep experience at the highest levels of corporate law and litigation, at the economics of a boutique practice.

At large national firms, client matters are staffed to generate maximum billable hours. Clients pay for the firm’s real estate, its administrative infrastructure, its marketing, and its partnership distributions. At Jenkins Kayayan, you pay for legal work, and nothing else.

We take cases we believe in and staff them with attorneys who are invested in the outcome. That is a different kind of legal representation, and it shows in our results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does your billing structure compare to large national firms?

Our partners came from AmLaw 100 firms and bring the same caliber of work product and judgment those firms deliver. Our hourly rates, however, are materially below what AmLaw 100 firms charge for partners with comparable credentials and experience — frequently by a factor of two or more. Clients retain us for precisely this reason: institutional-grade representation without institutional-grade overhead.

Do you accept engagements outside California?

Yes. The firm has handled matters in federal district courts in Florida, Nebraska, Colorado, and elsewhere, and has argued appeals in the Eighth, Ninth, and Eleventh Circuits. For courts in which our attorneys are not already admitted, we appear pro hac vice and routinely coordinate with trusted local counsel where the matter calls for it.

How are cases staffed?

Leanly, and always with partner-level engagement. Unlike large firms that staff matters with tiers of junior associates whose time is billed at partner-adjacent rates, we staff each engagement with the smallest team capable of delivering the required result. A partner is substantively involved on every matter from intake through resolution.

What types of matters does the firm accept?

The firm is selective. We focus on complex commercial litigation, financial-institution disputes, mortgage repurchase defense, intellectual property, class action defense, real estate and land use, and matters involving AI infrastructure and data centers. We take on engagements where our combination of experience and tactical judgment will make a material difference to the outcome, and we decline engagements where it will not.

Do you offer alternative fee arrangements?

Yes, where the matter is a fit for them. Depending on the case, we consider flat fees for defined phases, blended rates, success-based components, and hybrid structures. Fee arrangements are discussed candidly at intake and memorialized in the engagement letter.

How quickly can the firm engage on an urgent matter?

Same day, when required. The firm has taken in emergency TRO and preliminary-injunction work and begun drafting within hours of initial contact. Because our bench is small and partner-led, we do not have the intake bureaucracy that slows engagement at larger firms.
